Italian troops killed in Kabul SVBIED

Aftermath of attack

Italian forces suffered a major loss in Afghanistan yesterday, when a suicide VBIED targeted a two-vehicle convoy in Kabul. Despite both vehicles being armoured, six Italian paras were killed, and four wounded. Ten afghan civilians also died, with another 50 injured.

Reportedly the two vehicles were caught in traffic when the bomber managed to place his vehicle in between them.

This is the largest loss of life suffered by Italian forces since the 2003 suicide bombing of a base in Nasiriyah southern Iraq, in which 17 paramilitary police personnel were killed. That attack led to the withdrawal of Italian forces from Iraq. It appears that yesterday’s bombing may also cause Italy to withdraw from Afghanistan, if Prime Minister Berlusconi’s reaction is anything to go by.
